James Taranto has some amusing observations about how Obama has embraced metrics while poking fun at the wildly varying estimates of the adoring throng in Berlin: Quoting another blogger:
Susanne Gelhard was out and about on the so-called "Fan Mile" between the Victory Column and the Brandenburg Gate. "The expectations were highly varied," she said in her live report, "from a few thousand up to a million. Those were the estimates.
Yes, in a
column where Taranto writes, tongue-in-cheek "Dems have nominated someone who actually
uses the metric system," there is a mention of a place in Berlin called the fan
mile.
In the same column, Taranto mocks the standardized tests from "No Child Left Behind" where, now, amazingly, males and females have achieved "gender parity" in test results. Of course, this is not due to our public education overcoming a historical discrepancy, but by the test lacking any complex analytical problems. All great points. However, in a rare oversight, Taranto misses the obvious conclusion: the test appeals to the lowest common denominator.
